I have had the privilege of knowing Schai Schairer for over a decade, beginning at Transracial Journeys, a camp for transracially adopted persons and their families. From the start, Schai captivated children and youth, bringing their experiences to life with empathy and powerful storytelling that resonates deeply with those who often feel unseen. Schai has since transformed her life experiences into impactful programs and poetry that inspire change, especially through her work with Fighting Injustice Standing Together (FISTdc). From graduating at the top of her class at Howard University to earning the Maryland Women’s Under 40 Award and the Montgomery County Serves award, Schai’s accomplishments reflect her unwavering commitment to empowering vulnerable women in and out of prison. Whether she’s mesmerizing young audiences at Transracial Journeys or advocating for justice through FIST, Schai is a true force for change, touching lives and inspiring change the world needs.

I had the incredible opportunity to facilitate classes with Schai in the Prison to Poetry Pipeline program in Maryland, and it was truly an unforgettable experience! Schai, the visionary behind this initiative, created an inspiring atmosphere that fostered creativity and truth among all participants. Her passion for poetry and dedication to uplifting marginalized voices were evident in every aspect of the program.
